Spring Lecture 2026

WEDNESDAY 22nd APRIL 2026

Dr Ian Roberts

Chief Medical Officer for the circuit and for the British F1 Grand Prix

Driving around in Circles

Ian’s interest in motorsport changed over 30 years ago when he decided to become a participant rather than a spectator. Since competitive driving was not an option (too scary!) he became a member of the medical team at Silverstone. He subsequently became the Chief Medical Officer for the circuit and for the British F1 Grand Prix.
Ian has served as Chairman of the Motorsport UK Medical Committee and Vice-President of the FIA Medical Commission. His hobby subsequently developed into a full time position as the FIA F1 Medical Rescue Coordinator and the FIA’s Senior Medical Delegate to the Formula One World Championship.
A graduate from Leicester University Medical School, Ian came to Stoke in the 1990’s as a Registrar in Anaesthesia and completed a master’s degree at Keele. He is now retired as a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care
